Winter and Holiday Travel Vehicle Emergency Kit

The Skokie Health and Human Services (HHS) would like to remind you to be aware of winter weather and ways to protect your health in colder temperatures. The CDC suggests that during winter storms one should avoid traveling if possible but if necessary you should maintain an emergency kit in your car. Some items that are recommended include;

  • Cell phone, charger, extra batteries
  • Extra hats, coats, mittens, and blankets for warmth
  • Windshield scraper
  • Shovel
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlight
  • Water and snacks
  • A first aid kit
  • Bright colored flag or help signs
  • Jumper cables

A full list of items as well as suggestions for car kits for year-round safety can be found here: Preparing for a Winter Storm Winter Weather (cdc.gov)

The Skokie HHS recommends that you have maintenance service on your vehicle as often as the manufacture recommends and that every fall you complete the following:

  • Oil Change
  • Radiator system serviced
  • Antifreeze levels checked and replenished
  • Ensure tires are winter appropriate, have adequate tread and air pressure
  • Brakes are checked and serviced
  • Windshield wipers checked and replaced if necessary
