The U.S. Surgeon General recently alerted the public to a 900% increase since 2011 in electronic cigarette use by high school students.  Vaping is the act of inhaling an aerosol produced by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, heavy metals and other chemicals. E-cigarettes are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so it is difficult for consumers to know the exact ingredients.  Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, cigars or pipes, others are disguised to look like USB flash drives, pens and everyday items.

E-cigarettes appeal to adolescents through candy flavorings and the false claim that this is a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes.  They contain nicotine and are highly addictive!   E-cigarettes are a gateway to traditional tobacco use for many young kids.  The Skokie Health Department is working with PEER Services to bring vaping education to staff, parents, and students at local school districts, and encourages all to attend.

If you are interested in arranging a presentation at your children’s school, please call the Health Department at 847-933-8252.
