1. What is a warming/cooling center?

Warming Centers are heated facilities where any resident can go during periods of extreme cold temperatures to stay warm and safe. Likewise, Cooling Centers offer residents air-conditioned refuge from oppressive summer heat. Agencies that volunteer their facilities as Warming and Cooling Centers, work to make visitors comfortable. While these centers are meant for short-term, daytime use, many are prepared to expand hours.

When temperatures in Skokie are expected to rise or drop to unsafe levels, residents who do not have access to air conditioning or heat are encouraged to take advantage of the following cooling/warming centers.

3. Can I receive ongoing therapy from the Human Services Division?

We provide referrals to agencies for long-term counseling needs. Please contact Human Services at 847-933-8208 for information. 

4. What type of specialized transportation does Skokie have for seniors?

The Village operates a Senior Transportation for Area Residents (STAR) program, a curb-to-curb transportation system for seniors and residents with a disability. Visit our

5. Are there volunteer opportunities available through the Human Services Division?

Yes. Volunteer recruitment is ongoing for several Human Services Division programs including Home Delivered Meals, Senior Health Insurance, Boomers and Beyond, Produce Initiative, Tax Preparation and Human Services Office Reception. For more information, contact Human Services at 847-933-8208.

6. My aging parent lives in Skokie. What services are available to them? Can I make the arrangements for them?

Human Services staff are available to provide information on local programs and services for seniors in Skokie and the local surrounding area. We are happy to answer any questions you may have. Please contact Human Services at 847-933-8208. 

7. My teenager is very rebellious and I'm afraid he or she might end up in serious trouble. Can I turn to the Village for help?

You may contact either the Human Services Division at 847-933-8208 or the Police Department social worker at 847-982-5943.

8. My next door neighbor and I are fighting about a neighborhood problem and things are very tense between us. Can the Village help?

The Village has a neighbor mediation program through the Northwest Municipal Conference. If you have an issue you can’t resolve by discussing it with your neighbor, please contact Human Services  at 847-933-8208.

9. How do I get help?
