Emergency Preparedness

Be Prepared

Emergency preparedness is a planning process that will help identify ways to remain safe before, during, and after an emergency event or disaster. Residents should engage in this process to prepare themselves and their homes for unexpected emergencies or severe weather-related events.

Be In the Know

Residents are strongly encouraged to enroll in Smart911, the Village's official emergency notification system, to ensure they receive emergency alerts regarding weather and other public safety incidents.

In addition, the Skokie Police Department regularly communicates need-to-know information to residents via Twitter.

How the Village Prepares

Emergency Management Planning Team

One of the primary goals of the Village of Skokie is to provide a safe, secure, and resilient community for our residents and visitors. To help meet this goal, the Village has an Emergency Management Planning Team (EMPT). The EMPT is a group of Village staff responsible for coordinating the Village's emergency operations planning, response, and recovery efforts.

Emergency Operations Plan

The EMPT has developed an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) as a resource to help prepare for and respond to Village-wide emergencies and weather events or disasters. The EOP provides a set of policies and procedures that guides the Village's emergency and disaster response and recovery.

Emergency Operations Center

The Village's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) operates out of one of two predetermined facilities located within the Village. Village personnel from various departments staff the EOC. In the event of severe weather, a disaster, an emergency, or a public health threat, the Village activates the EOC to coordinate response and recovery operations. EMPT members have received extensive training in emergency management from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the American Red Cross and various other professional organizations.
