Battery Recycling
The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) established a Battery Recycling Program for rechargeable batteries, such as Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh), Lithium, Zinc-Air, Silver-oxide, and Small Sealed Lead Acid. These batteries can be dropped off at the Skokie Health Department, 5127 Oakton Street.Common household batteries are no longer accepted at Illinois EPA-sponsored household chemical waste events and facilities, due to their benign nature and high recycling costs. On the other hand, rechargeable batteries contain heavy metals, which pose a threat to our environment and have a marketable recyclability.

Birth and Death Registry
Certified certificates for births and deaths that have occurred in Skokie since 1969 are available for purchase. Information on where to obtain certificates for births and deaths that occurred outside of Skokie is available.Blood Pressure Screenings

Child Safety Seat Program, seat rental
Infant/toddler car safety seats are available from the Skokie Health Department for short-term loan to Skokie residents. This service can be especially useful to grandparents when their grandchildren come to visit. An advance reservation is recommended and a $10 payment is required for each seat borrowed. Colon-rectal Screenings
The Skokie Health Department provides home testing kits to Skokie residents & non-residents that work in Skokie, for a $10 charge. Once the test is completed, the kit should be returned to the Health Department for analysis. Follow-up recommendations are provided by the nursing staff. Medical personnel and other professionals are required by law to report communicable diseases to the Skokie Health Department. Public health nurses provide consultation to affected residents and institutions. Disease investigations may involve chicken pox, strep throat, hepatitis, salmonella, and more than 50 other reportable conditions. Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs
Recycle used CFL bulbs at the Skokie Health Department, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A limit of 12 CFL bulbs per household per visit only. Owners of multiunit buildings or multiple houses and business owners, please call SWANCC at (847) 724-9205 or go to their website www.swancc.org for drop off locations.

Emergency Preparedness
One of the primary goals of the Village of Skokie is to provide a safe and secure Village through Emergency Preparedness. Environmental Complaint Investigations
Air pollution, weed complaints, hazardous waste concerns, and numerous other health hazards are investigated by the Skokie Health Department. Call the Environmental Health Division at 847-933-8484 to file a complaint. Environmental Health Education Programs
Skokie Health Department staff can provide educational programs on a wide variety of environmental topics for schools or organizations in Skokie. When medications are no longer needed, it's important to dispose of them properly. The Health Department collects expired, unwanted or unused medications for disposal Mondays through Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Controlled substances (for example pain medications) are not accepted but can be brought to the Skokie Police Department. Please keep the medications in their original containers leaving the names of the medications visible on the containers. Any over the counter liquids can be placed in the trash.F
Flu Shot Clinics
The Skokie Health Department offers flu shots to eligible Skokie residents every fall with no out-of-pocket expense. Medicare Part B is billed for reimbursement when possible. Contact the Health Department at 847-933-8252 for further information. Food Complaint Investigations
The Skokie Health Department conducts regular inspections of restaurants, groceries, processors, institutions, vending machines, mobile vendors, and food delivery vehicles to insure compliance with food safety regulations. The Department also investigates and documents citizen complaints regarding the sanitation of establishments. Epidemiological investigations of reported food borne illnesses are done by the sanitarians and nursing staff when necessary. Lead Screenings
Children age 1 year to 6 years who live in Skokie or attend a Skokie school can receive a blood lead screening test from the Skokie Health Department. There is a $25 fee for this screening and appointments are required. The fee is waived for income eligible families. Call 847-933-8252 for more information or to schedule an appointment. The Skokie Health Department offers the lipid profile screening by appointment to Skokie residents and non-residents that work in Skokie. Needle and Syringe Disposal
The Skokie Health Department participates in a needle and syringe ("sharps") disposal program sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County. Residents who regularly dispose of used needles and syringes are able to obtain a puncture-resistant disposal box and return it for appropriate disposal when it is full. Rat Control in Skokie
The Village of Skokie has an aggressive rat control program (PDF) that includes inspections for rats, treatment of burrows, and ensuring preventive measures are in place. Residents are encouraged to report rat sightings to the Health Department at 847-933-8484, or by using a new online reporting form. Rats live in areas where there is food, water and shelter. Rats can be prevented by bagging garbage securely in containers, picking up fallen birdseed, cleaning up after dogs, and maintaining property.Rethink Your Drink

SAHELI
The Skokie Health Department is now recruiting participants for the South Asian Healthy Lifestyle Initiative (SAHELI). Research shows that South Asians have a higher risk of heart disease compared to the general population. In order to help, the Health Department is partnering with Northwestern University to bring SAHELI to the Skokie community.

Solid Waste Investigations
Skokie Health Department sanitarians will respond to complaints of improperly stored refuse, improper storage of hazardous materials, and illegal dumping of materials.
