Crime Prevention & Community Relations Unit

The Crime Prevention/Community Relations Unit remains active in its efforts to educate and inform the public with timely information regarding personal safety and the prevention of crime. To that end, significant efforts have been made to bolster the Department’s interaction with the community via Facebook, Twitter and the Smart911 emergency alert system which allows the Police Department to send up-to-date information and messages to those registered to receive this service via email and/or text messages. Members of the Crime Prevention Unit are involved in a wide variety of efforts in support of the Department’s mission. These initiatives include, but are not limited to, meeting with business associations and senior organizations to speak with them about crime prevention topics of interest; hosting quarterly TRIAD meetings for its senior resident members, coordinating the Officer Friendly Program for elementary aged youth, attending quarterly Beat meetings and providing management and oversight to the school Crossing Guard Program. The Crime Prevention staff also coordinates the Law Enforcement Exploring Post #300, a youth group for young adults interested in a career in law enforcement.

The Skokie Police Volunteer Program, which results in almost 1,200 hours of yearly service generously provided by the volunteers is also overseen by members of the Crime Prevention Unit. The Unit recently conducted the 38th session of the Citizen Police Academy and will tentatively begin the 39th session of the Citizen Police Academy in Spring 2020. This reality-based program is designed to give participants a better understanding of law enforcement in general, and the Skokie Police Department in particular, through interesting hands-on experiences.

The Crime Prevention/Community Relations Unit offers a variety of information brochures for Skokie residents.  To obtain more information on the following topics, please call Crime Prevention / Support Services Division at (847) 982-5900 or email to crime.prevention@skokie.org.
