Construction Projects

Streets

Residential Street Resurfacing -  June through October
The Village will resurface 3.8 miles of residential streets at locations throughout the Village. Other projects will increase the total resurfacing in the Village to 5.2 miles.

High Priority Street Patching -  Fall
The Village will utilize Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to perform full width patching of eligible streets.

Please note that most major thoroughfares in Skokie are maintained by Cook County or the State of Illinois. View the jurisdictions of all Skokie streets. 

Sidewalks and Trails

Sidewalk Improvement Project - Summer and Fall
This maintenance program replaces failed sections of sidewalk, and includes concrete street patching and replacement of broken curbs. The main area of work in 2023 will be between Main and Howard Streets.

IDOT Pedestrian Improvements - Summer
IDOT will upgrade sidewalk pedestrian crossings at multiple locations around the Village.

Bike Trail Improvements - Fall
2023 bike infrastructure improvements will include maintenance on the Sculpture Park Bike Trail and additions to the Old Orchard Path.  

Water and Sewer

Water Main Rehabilitation - Summer and Fall
The Village will replace 1.6 miles of water main that has reached the end of its service life.

Sewer Lining - Fall
The Village will rehabilitate 9,000 linear feet of sewer main. Sewer lining is a less intrusive way to rehabilitate older sewer lines without digging them up.

MWRD – Force Main Replacement - April through October
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) will continue construction of a new sewer main from the plant at Howard Street and McCormick Boulevard south through the sculpture park along McCormick into Lincolnwood.

Lighting and Traffic Signals

LED Lighting Upgrades - Ongoing
The Village will continue upgrading residential street lighting with LED fixtures in northeast areas of Skokie.

IDOT – Edens Expressway LED Lighting Upgrades - Summer
IDOT will upgrade arterial street lighting along the Edens Expressway.

IDOT – Lincoln/Howard/Skokie Blvd. Traffic Signal Upgrades - Summer
IDOT will upgrade existing traffic signal equipment and modernize signal timings at the intersections of Lincoln Avenue, Howard Street and Skokie Boulevard.

Transit

Pace Bus – Pulse Line Construction - Summer
Pace will install three Pulse Bus stations along Dempster Street.

Utilities

NICOR – Gas Main Replacement on Oakton Street - April through September
NICOR is completing the construction of a transmission main on Oakton Street between LaCrosse and Kenton Avenues.

NICOR – Other updates - April through October
NICOR will continue to replace aging gas mains and upgrade residential service lines throughout the Village.

2022 Completed Construction Projects 

Residential Street Resurfacing
The Village completed resurfacing of over six and a half miles of residential streets and asphalt paving of two previously oiled alleys.

Sewer Rehabilitation
The Village completed sewer lining repairs and sewer point repairs throughout the Village, and continued its annual sewer cleaning program, which improves sewer flow and identifies future needs.

High-Priority Patching Program
This project included full width patching throughout the Village. 

IDOT Intersection Improvements
IDOT completed the intersection improvement project at the intersections of Dempster Street, Niles Center Road and Skokie Boulevard in 2022.

Green Alley Improvements
The Village completed construction of three new green alleys in 2022.
