Complete Streets Policy

Skokie was one of eight communities awarded a technical assistance grant from the Active Transportation Alliance to develop a Complete Streets Policy and prepare implementation materials.  The grant was made possible by the Cook County Department of Public Health with U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention funds.

In March 2016, the Board of Trustees adopted a Complete Streets Policy (PDF), prioritizing pedestrian, bicycle, and transit modes of transportation, for people of all ages and abilities.

In September 2016, the Active Transportation Alliance assisted the Village of Skokie, Niles Township High School District 219, and Niles North High School faculty and students, with a Complete Streets pop-up demonstration project on Lawler Avenue.  Temporary improvements were set up for the afternoon to slow down motor vehicles and improve safety for students, faculty and motorists, including a landscaped boulevard, a second crosswalk and traffic signs.  A video of the Skokie: Pop-Up Complete Streets Event is available here.
