Building Permits are online.

Applications for building permits can only be submitted through online services or by email. The processes for issuing building permits and calling for inspections will continue with no changes. When necessary, paper copies of large-format plans can be dropped-off. Permit applications can be submitted by using the following methods:

• For most building permits, go to Skokie Permits. These include interior remodeling, garages, driveways, decks, and swimming pools.

• For smaller jobs, go to Skokie Expedited Permits. These include air conditioners, amplifiers, dumpsters, electrical service upgrades, fences, furnaces, raffles, sewer, sheds, and water heaters.

• For all other permits, please email Building@skokie.org and building staff will respond to your request. Application forms can be found at Skokie Applications.

About

The Community Development Department includes the Building, Zoning and Property Standards; Economic Development; and Planning Divisions and provides "one-stop-shopping" for the Village's development needs.

Staff Responsibilities

Staff members work to assure buildings are safe by reviewing plans, preparing permits for new construction and renovations, and enforcing maintenance standards. The Community Development Department also:

• Administers Community Development Block Grant Projects
• Oversees Zoning
• Promotes Long-Range Planning and Economic Development
• Provides Staff Support to the Appearance Commission, Consumer Affairs Commission, Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals

Drainage

From time to time the Village is asked to help with rear yard drainage issues. The Village offers a complimentary program to help residents alleviate these problems. The Building Division staff will survey the subject area and identify solutions to help reduce ponding in the rear yard. Solutions may include an installation of a catch basin in the rear yard, re-grading the yard or a shifting of downspouts. The Village identifies the solution at no cost, but does not contribute financially to the implementation. Access the Residential Yard Drainage Assistance Program (PDF) form.

In addition, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has prepared a Green Neighbor Guide (PDF) which has information on how to reduce backyard flooding issues with rain gardens, dry wells, permeable patios and rain barrels.
