Boards & Commissions A - E
Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Village Board of Trustees. Please consider this an invitation to participate in your local government by volunteering your time to help maintain this great community. Although acceptance of an appointment to a Commission requires a commitment on your part, you will find it rewarding and enriching as you become an integral part of Village government.

Appearance Commission
The Appearance Commission is responsible for enhancing the quality of the built environment in the Village; it reviews all proposed new buildings, aesthetic changes to existing buildings, and landscaping plans.

Beautification & Improvement Commission
The beautification and improvement commission is responsible for coordinating with the Skokie department of public works and the village forester monitoring and maintaining the health of village trees as well as designing, supporting and funding landscaping for Village parkways and public properties.

Board of Fire & Police Commission
The Board of Fire and Police Commission of the Village of Skokie recruits, selects and appoints qualified candidates to fill vacancies for original appointment in the Fire and Police Departments, as well as testing and selection for promotions among other duties.

Board of Health
The Board of Health advises the Mayor and Board of Trustees about public health needs and concerns. They recommend specific environmental improvements and provide consultation about current problems. Committees are created as needed to propose actions on important issues.

Board of Local Improvements (Inactive)
The Board establishes a method of financing and makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees and reviews all local improvements.

Commission on Family Services
The Commission on Family Services provides a forum for focus on a wide range of issues concerning Skokie's most vulnerable citizens. Recommendations on policies, programs and procedures are made to the Mayor and Board of Trustees.

Consumer Affairs Commission
The Commission is an advisory body that prepares reports for the Village Board and makes recommendations on ordinances, regulations, and methods of enforcement related to consumer affairs.

Economic Development Commission
This advisory Commission, made up of Skokie business members, provides a sounding board, researching and analyzing issues affecting the quality of life in the Village as they relate to economic development. It is a resource for elected officials and staff to explore new economic development ideas.
