Adopt-A-Stray

Unclaimed cats and dogs are available for adoption through various adoption agencies that work with Animal Control. Click here for a list of pet adoption agencies. Contact Animal Control with any questions by clicking here to submit on online request. 

Animal Bite Investigations

Animal Control responds to reports of animal bites. Domestic animals will be observed for signs of rabies. Wild animals will be euthanized and tested for rabies. Call Animal Control at 847-982-5900 to report an animal bite. In case of an emergency, call 911.

Animal Control Educational Programs

Animal Control Officers provide information pertaining to wildlife and domestic animals located in Skokie. Educational programs are available to community groups and schools throughout the Village. Call 847-982-5900 for information or to schedule a program.

Dog and Cat Licensing

Pet owners must obtain a pet license for all dogs and cats over four months of age that reside in the Village of Skokie.  Pet licenses can be purchased at Skokie Village Hall located at 5127 Oakton St., Skokie, IL 60077.  Click here for more information on pet licensing.

Owning a Pet in Skokie


In order to maintain a high quality of life for Skokie residents, a variety of local ordinances relating to animals and their owners have been enacted. The most common ordinances include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Dog defecation must be picked immediately by the owner
  • Dogs are not allowed in parks/playgrounds
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times when not on the owner's property
  • Cats and dogs must have a valid Skokie pet license
  • Barnyard animals cannot be kept within the Village

Lost and Found Animals

Animal Control maintains records of all pets that have been reported lost or found in Skokie. The lost and found program assists individuals in recovering their lost pets. Stray Dogs & Cats

Stray dogs and cats picked up by Animal Control are temporarily housed until they are placed with a shelter for adoption. Every effort is made to find homes for all unclaimed animals.
